When the frets on a guitar begin to wear down they become flat and can develop divots. This leads to buzzing notes, poor intonation and poor playability. If this is the case the guitar needs a fret dress to correct these issues. Frets need to be level and rounded so that the string only comes into contact with a fine flat line on the top and the centre of the fret. If wear is extremely bad or the frets are too low then the guitar needs re fretting.
At Planet Guitar we use the Erlewine Neck Jig to carry out all of our fret work. The jig simulates string tension on the neck when there are no strings on the instrument. This enables perfectly level frets and perfect results everytime. There aren't many workshops locally that have this machine. We're extremely proud to have this in our tool collection!!
Guitar is attached to the neck jig and neck adjusted accordingly. Frets are levelled to the same height, each fret is profiled individually creating a rounded look, frets are then sanded to remove file marks and buffed to a high finish creating a smooth feel. Guitar is then fully set up.
